I have learnt ... Lessons from my father

Yesterday was observed as Father's Day and we asked Prime Minister Bruce Golding, who is also a father, the question that is the focus of our cover story this week, 'What have you learnt from your father that you have passed on to your son?'.

"My father Tacius Golding was a man who embodied the core values of loyalty and dedication to his fellowmen and country, both as a teacher and politician. Service was a valuable lesson that I learnt from a very young age, as I 'sat at his feet' in the early days of his political career.

"Even though my own son has not followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and myself into the formal political arena, he continues to live the fundamental lessons of leadership, commitment and service to country and people through his own chosen path.

Sharing

"The bond between a father and son, strengthened by the sharing of common goals and interests, has been something I have sought to replicate with my own son. Many fishing expeditions with Steven have allowed for that bond to be nurtured and fostered. An unyielding love and commitment to family is another critical lesson I have inculcated in my son, as stable families represent the 'backbone' of our communities and country.

"My own father has passed on to me a treasured legacy of love for and service to one's family and country that I hold dear and hope to proudly watch my son display in his own life."

Robert Russell (centre), chairman of the Tourism Product Development Company, has taught his sons, Robin (left) and Jason, that their word must be their bond. "You should never do anything unless you plan to do it properly and always try to help others who are less fortunate, because what goes around, comes around." This was a valuable lesson from the elder Russell's father. - photo by Denise Reid
