NOTE-WORTHY: National ID system
published: Monday | June 16, 2008

National ID system

In order to solve the problem of crime and violence, I am once again stressing the importance of a national registration system which will aid in correctly identifying an individual's origin and current place of residence.

With this system, everyone must be given an identification card which must be carried at all times. Eventually, with this system in force, it will make it much easier for both the judicial system and the security forces to apprehend these thugs who are hell-bent on destroying our country. It will also provide database with all the necessary information on an individual for even the simplest of crimes.

Once we have this system in place, it is important that the citizens demand that the government, in conjunction with the opposition, business leaders, security forces and, regrettably, leaders of these thugs convene a conference so as to determine the true causes, and what actions must be taken to tackle this "our number-one enemy".

Crime question

Everyone in Jamaica is perplexed by what to do about the crime problem. Einstein said if he had one hour to solve a problem, he would spend 59 minutes searching for the right question. How much of the Jamaica murder rate is attributable to extortion racket? Each time you see a business person killed, is it related to extortion? If it is extortion, who is the extortion kingfish?

Political thuggery

I watched on YouTube, the video-sharing website, as an Englishman and his camera went into the very heart of the war zones in Kingston and laid bare our dirty little secrets.

What I saw made me believe even more that our politicians are to be blamed for the crime and violence perpetrated on Jamaicans. The Jamaican people must demand from both the Jamaica Labour Party and the People's National Party that they rein in their political thugs. If an Englishman can come to Jamaica and in one week find these gunmen, then surely our politicians can do much more.

Top Police Officer

We wish to thank Terrence Bent, superintendent in charge of St Catherine South, on the excellent tour of duty he had in St Catherine North over the last few months. Superintendent Bent served without bias, without any agenda whatsoever, and we wish to publicly congratulate him on his excellence.
