Pick 9 should top $10m mark
published: Friday | June 13, 2008

Mullings

Punters who expect to attend Caymanas Park in large numbers for tomorrow's Digicel Derby Day programme will have an opportunity to win millions, thanks to huge carryovers in both the Pick-9 and Super-6 exotic bets.

Last Saturday, the Pick-9 eluded punters for the seventh consecutive raceday this following notable upsets by AITCHEMESBEAGLE at 27-1, with in-form Oneil Mullings aboard; RED GENERAL at 26-1 and SEA DA BREEZE at 12-1.

As a result, consolation prizes on the Pick-9 were paid out to 14 punters with seven of nine winners, each receiving $30,062.

The Pick-9 carryover stands at a whopping $7.1 million; the Super-6 carryover $3.4 million after 25 punters with five of six winners received $24,140.00 each.

A real possibility

As things now stand, a Pick-9 payout of $10 million looks a real possibility. And the Pick-9 should easily surpass the $5-million mark. Tomorrow's mammoth 14-race programme kicks off an hour earlier than usual at 11 a.m. in order to accommodate two Super-6s - the first from races two to seven, the second from eight to 13.

Meanwhile, the Pick-9 will embrace races six to 14. On a day when all the races on the carry have been named for Digicel, including the 88th running of the Jamaica Derby to be contested by 14 starters over 2400 metres and the $1.5 million Digicel Irish Jamaican Stakes (grade one) over 1300 metres, the Derby offers a total purse of $5 million - up from $4.25 million last year.

It will be run as the 13th and penultimate race at 5:35 p.m.
