JOSEPH HIBBERT, state minister for transport and works, says with 52 per cent of the country's main road network in poor condition, it will cost the Government $37.5 billion to carry out necessary repairs.
Speaking in the 2008-2009 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Hibbert said a road maintenance master plan had been developed and was now being reviewed by Cabinet.
He said the master plan was crafted through grant funding from the European Union.
"Once Cabinet approval has been granted, the expenditure on our roads will ensure a gradual improvement to the entire network," said Hibbert.
Bridge work
The transport and works ministry will also construct 11 bridges this year, and another 10 bridge sites are now being considered for construction.
Commenting on the National Works Agency, the junior minister said its capabilities were reduced because it was operating without an architect, commissioned land surveyor and quantity surveyor.
He told the House of Representatives that the agency had to hire consultants to provide the necessary services.
However, he said the ministry was moving to fill the vacant positions.
