A man who allegedly molested a nine-year-old girl in rural St Catherine is now behind bars.
The man's name has been withheld.
A disturbing report has also arisen that the abused child had allegedly performed oral sex on a female classmate in the school bathroom.
The classmate made a complaint when the nine-year-old attempted to do it a second time.
The headmaster later informed the parents of both students about the incidents.
Counselling
"I had to seek counselling sessions for the students at a neighbouring school to educate them about sensitive matters like these," the principal said.
Schools of that population size, The Gleaner was informed, are not assigned guidance counsellors, according to Ministry of Education policy.
The St Catherine police said the man is held pending further investigation.
Mary Clarke, Jamaica's children's advocate, has urged the police to pursue investigations to ensure justice was done.
"They need to know if they abuse children, they have a huge chance of getting caught," Clarke stated.
