WESTERN BUREAU:
Breadfruit grows abundantly in Jamaica and it's one more alternative to rice. It started in May 2003 under the name, Whithorn Breadfruit Festival. However, the name was changed to Breadfruit Sell Off after another parish started having its own festival with a similar name.
The sixth staging of the event was held in Whithorn, Westmoreland, on Sunday, and as the name suggests, everything was completely sold out, despite the inclement weather.
According to event organiser, Kevin 'Escallion' Davis, "When I saw everybody having all these food festivals around the place, I came up with the idea of a breadfruit festival because we have so much breadfruit in Whithorn.
"We had it in May for the first three years but because it always rain, we decided to try June. Today, even with the rains, patrons still came out."
He commended his co-organiser, Tizzy Brown, who assisted in making the event a success.
Patrons got a taste of breadfruit cake, pudding, bread, breadfruit juice, roasted breadfruit, breadfruit salad, breadfruit chips and even breadfruit drops.
However, the breadfruit cake and juice were the hits at the event.
The breadfruit pudding proved a hit at Breadfruit Sell Off festival.
