Sherone Simpson, Nesta Carter win in Berlin
published: Monday | June 2, 2008

Nesta Carter and Sherone Simpson logged Jamaican victories at the season's opening Golden League event, the DKB-ISTAF Berlin meeting at the Olympic Stadium in Germany.

The achievements of both athletes - members of MVP track club - were season bests.

Carter's victory came in the men's 100m, in a time of 10.08 seconds, a career best for the former Manchester High student. His MVP teammate, Michael Frater, the 2005 World Championships 100m silver medallist, was seventh in 10.23.

Former world champion Kim Collins was second in 10.12.

Good run

Simpson made her 200m seasonal debut with a 22.43 seconds run, beating Russian Yulia Gushchina, who, along with Kerron Stewart, was credited with identical 22.58 seconds, for second and third respectively.

Adrian Findlay was the next-best placed Jamaican. He finished second in the men's 400m hurdles in 49.13 behind American Bershawn Jackson (48.73).

In the women's 100m hurdles, Vonette Dixon was fourth in 12.71, while Brigitte Foster-Hylton finished eighth in 12.97. Delloreen Ennis-London did not finish.

Ding-dong battle

Kenia Sinclair finished fourth but registered her season best 1:59.34 in the women's 800m, which was won by little-known Kenyan Pamela Jelimo (1:54.99).

Ricardo Chambers (45.52) was sixth in the men's 400m, the race that produced one of the meet's huge upsets as LaShawn Merritt (44.03) outlasted fellow United States colleague, world and Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner (44.07), following a ding-dong battle over the final 100 metres.

James Beckford (7.64m) was ninth in the men's long jump.
