A trained teacher who once taught at Kingston Technical High School, Chorvelle Johnson's greatest pleasure is seeing others succeed. "As long as I am helping someone to achieve and be successful, then I haven't changed industries," she explained of her segue from education to insurance to her current role as regional vice-president of sales and service at Scotia DBG Investments.

"I taught fourth and fifth forms and the greatest pleasure for me was seeing them pass all their subjects."

Team work

Johnson was with Billy Craig Merchant Bank when they were acquired by DB&G in 1996. Since then, she has risen to the top of her game on merging her personal motto and that of her father's, 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you', and, 'No man is an island, no man stands alone'. "I have learnt that if you want to achieve anything, it takes a team and team work. Ideas don't only come from the top, they come from the bottom and sides, too, and if you listen to your clients and staff, you will achieve."

A past student of Knox College, Johnson grew up in Spaldings, Clarendon, and was officially assigned to her current role last November. Her previous post was vice-president of DB&G's southern region. Now, she is in charge of the entire island and directing the company's sales and services.

But what may seem like a mammoth task to others is a world of opportunities for Johnson. "I don't see any challenges because when you look at things in the negative, it comes back to you. I look at them as opportunities, among them, being one of the most successful merchant banks in the country and having an exceptional team. When the team achieves its goals, it benefits the clients."
