M'haven on brink of the NPL
published: Sunday | June 1, 2008

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

MEADHAVEN UNITED will have promotion squarely in their sights when they tackle Rivoli United in the National Premier League (NPL) play-offs at Constant Spring today.

A win for the KSAFA team would push it to an insurmountable 12 points and ensure it finishes the competition, which will see two teams promoted to the NPL next season, in at least second place. However, knowing a loss could put them level with York on points, who will play Wadadah in the day's other game, Rivoli will have other ideas.

Rivoli slightly favoured

In the first encounter between the teams, Rivoli, perhaps slightly favoured based on the experience factor, were handed a 3-2 loss at the Spanish Town Prison Oval despite scoring first. While they are winless at home, the St Catherine team is undefeated on the road but faces a difficult task as Meadhaven have won three games in a row.

Meadhaven could have secured promotion with a win over Wadadah midweek but that game was called off after 60 minutes due to rain and a waterlogged pitch. Despite being heavily favoured to lock up the spot, Meadhaven coach Lijyasu Simms isn't ready to celebrate just yet.

"The job is not yet over. We will have to keep our heads down and look to take all three points in every game we play," Simms said.

At the York Sports Complex, the battle between Wadadah and home team York is also expected to be another fierce one. Wadadah, who had targeted a return to the top flight after being relegated one season ago, are practically out of the competition having lost three games in a row. Those include two home losses at the Urban Development Corpo-ration (UDC) field in Montego Bay.

However, according to their coach, Delroy Delisser, the Westerners have not yet given up the ghost.

"We are aiming to win the three games left and hope that the other games go in our favour," Delisser said after the team's abandoned fixture against Meadhaven, a game he is confident his team would have won.
