The Editor, Sir:
One of the most topical issues on the Jamaican scene today is the issue of homosexuality. All sorts of things are happening as it relates to this subject.
A gay lobby group in Canada gave Jamaica an ultimatum to repeal its buggery laws and be more accepting of homosexuals.
The prime minister's stance against gays during a recent BBC interview elicited a response fromJ-FLAG on behalf of gays.
In the midst of all this, what I find surprising is that the issue of Sodom and Gomorrah comes up simply because homosexuality is cited as the kind of wickedness which led to the destruction of those cities, as described in the Bible. But that was not the most frequent aspect of the biblical episode.
Filled with all ills
The murder rate in Jamaica has skyrocketed over the past two months, and I do not hear people crying out for Sodom and Gomorrah.
According to Genesis, Abraham pleaded with God for the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and begged him to spare Sodom if he could find even five righteous persons there; but the city was still destroyed. Only Lot and his two daughters were spared, because not even his wife made it.
The city was filled with thieves, murderers, liars, gamblers, blasphemers, and homosexuals as well. They had no respect for God or his laws and so they were destroyed.
I hope this serves to inform those who did not know, that Sodom and Gomorrah were not just cities filled with 'batty men' but were filled with all the ills of our country and by extension, our world today.
As for the pastors and biblical experts, I hope in your exegesis and biblical discussions you point out to your eager audiences all the ills that plagued Sodom and Gomorrah.
Christ was accepting of the prostitute whom many were ready to stone to death. He challenged them saying, "He that is without sin, cast the first stone". Bear this in mind, fellow God-fearing Jamaicans, when you promote killing and ostracising homosexuals.
I am, etc.,
