Summerbell, star
published: Sunday | June 1, 2008

Glenroy Sinclair, Assignment Coordinator

Although he missed out on the opportunity to show off what he has to offer, at the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship, held last Sunday at the Dover Raceway, St Ann, Guyana's top driver, Mark Viera, believes he still has a chance of winning the regional title.

His Shell/Digicel RX7 Mazda rolled during a practise session, several hours before the race meet began. Despite the attempts made by his service crew, the car could not be repaired in time for the regional event.

"It was unfortunate, this means that I will have to wait until they get to Barbados for the second leg, but David Summerbell has done well and made the Jamaican people happy," said Viera.

star of the meet

Summerbell was the star of the meet, winning two of the three Caribbean Championship races, to lead the tables on 28 points.

"The car can go a little bit faster and that is something we will be working on," said a smiling Summerbell.

Peter 'Bull' Thompson, whose RX7 engine got damaged the afternoon before the race meet, was overwhelmed with the performance of the Jamaican team.

"For Doug Gore to be running so close to Summerbell, that means he is doing very well," said 'Bull' Thompson. "Not because I am not out there, but the guys must be congratulated, the foreigners are no match to them," said Thompson.

He explained that he made several attempts to correct the mechanical problems of his RX7 Mazda, but "the parts that we need was not available."

gear problem

Guyana's Andrew King who is currently second in the standings, was faced with gear problem and had to just do his best to complete the events.

"I could not find the third gear, the car just kept going into second and fourth gear," said King.

The Barbadian Mark Maloney, with his custom-built Mazda, stunned the huge crowd in the final of the three races, when he took the checkered flag, ahead of King. This was after he suffered from a oil leak, which resulted in a small fire on the track, then a second before the final race he collided with Doug Gore's car.

Malooney shrugged off the lean spell, by taking charge of the race, after Summerbell and Gore's cars developed mechanical problems.

It was another well-attended, action-packed and exciting race meet. The only disappointment was the hours patrons took to exit the venue after the race meet. This was due to the pile up of traffic.
