Résumés could do the trick for job hunters
published: Sunday | May 18, 2008

Holness and Allen

National Commercial Bank (NCB) is one of the leading commercial banks in Jamaica and many new high school and university graduates will by seeking jobs with that company.

General manager of training and human resources at NCB, Rickert Allen, says the bank generally employs university graduates. Only in exceptional cases is leniency granted to persons who do not meet the necessary matriculation.

Allen says this has been the company's policy since raising its matriculation standard.

With a high number of qualified persons hunting jobs at NCB, applicants have to sell themselves through résumés and cover letters before being shortlisted for an interview.

Allen says the information in these documents is what sets applicants apart.

"From those, we can get an understanding of the person's attitude. We can see things like how involved they were in school, separate and apart from academics. We also look for the necessary experience they have because you know there are graduates who worked while they were in school."

Nicole Holness, human resource officer, says the bank's recruitment team specifically deals with scouting for new employees. She says NCB has also implemented a management trainee programme, targeting university graduates, which normally lasts for a period of 18 months.
