Pop, soul rap go pop, sizzle, splat
published: Sunday | May 18, 2008

Musician Will.i.am. - REUTERS

Artiste: Will.i.am featuring Cheryl Cole

Title: Heartbreaker

Rating: 2 stars out of 5

Every now and again some pop princess decides she needs a bit of 'edge' and teams up with someone who she thinks is cool. Not someone who their management might think is too dangerous or someone who is too underground, but someone who can make them look a bit better than their bandmates.

The last two have been Spice Girls. Remember when Mel B and Missy Elliot hooked up for I Want You Back? And who can forget when Posh Spice started rolling with Dame Dash and The Roc-a-fella fam? Now Cheryl Cole has swapped Louis Walsh for Will.i.am. Is it any good? Course not. She's not even on the tune that much.

Artiste: Suga Rush Beat

Title: The Suga Rush Beat Company

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

It's been a long time coming, but finally the SugaRush Beat Company album is with us. For the last few years most of the best soul music has come from collectives like Reel People. It's nice to have an album from a group, albeit one formed with solo artistes. Beggars can't be choosers and all that.

Oh Lord (Take Me Back) is perhaps the only song that justifies The Sly And The Family Stone comparisons. As with all the best albums, there's not a dud in sight, just a lot of slightly leftfield different stuff. All Of A Suddenly, The Number One, the single L.O.V.E and the title track are all off the chain.

Rap artiste Lil Wayne - REUTERS

Artiste: Lil Wayne

Title: Lollipop

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Lil Wayne's Lollipop may seem like a strange choice for a first single from an album as big as The Carter III, surely one of, if not the biggest album of the year. But it works. Maybe it's because Wayne is so big right now he could release a sizzurped-up version of The Hokey Cokey and it would hit in the club. But as it gets hotter, this song makes more and more sense.

There's not much to find out apart from the fact that his shorty 'weears her hurrrrr like mine.' But if nothing else, it lends credence to the rumours that your boy Weezy is going to do a full-length album with the current vocoder, king T Pain.

Foxy Brown - Contributed

Artiste: Foxy Brown featuring. Lil Mo

Title: Bullet Proof Love

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Foxy's only been out of jail for about a week and she's already got another warrant out for her arrest. Apparently, this is for a different incident than the one that sent her to the Island. Just can't help some people, can you? Thankfully, she's still one of the best emcees out there, of whatever gender.

Lil Mo is still one of the best vocalists. Foxy spits that old fly stuff, about how much she loves her gansgta dude. But unlike most, she, perhaps unfortunately, can back her chat. Let's hope she can stay out of jail long enough to drop her album!
