Top-flight Guyanese cars are here for next weekend's Caribbean Circuit Racing Championship, which will held at Dover Raceway in St Ann.
"The cars arrived yesterday (Tuesday) and the drivers should be here early this week," president of the Jamaica Race Drivers Club, Hilary Jardine, told Automotives on Wednesday.
Guyanese Andrew King is no stranger to the challenging Dover circuit. He came here in the 1990s for an international race meet. King and the Guyanese champion driver, Mark Viera, are among a team of four scheduled to challenge the Jamaicans and the Barbadians.
According to Jardine, King demonstrated his readiness for the regional meet by defeating Viera at a domestic meet in Guyana on May 4.
much lighter, more powerful
The other two Guyanese are Kevin Jeffries and Vishook Persaud, who will be driving a Mitsubishi Lancer and Subaru Impreza, respectively. They are expected to be joined by Giampeiro Matti of St Marteen.
"While King has changed his car, Viera is coming with a much lighter and more powerful vehicle," said Jardine.
The Barbados contingent comprises a father-and-son team, Doug and Mark Malooney. According to Dean Corrodus' report, the father and son team will be driving a turbo-charged Audi Touring car. Three RX7 Mazda motor cars are also in the Bajan line-up.
Among the local drivers who will be representing Jamaica are Doug Gore, who is the defending champion; Peter Rae; Marck Carey; former champion David Summerbell; Matthew Gore and Peter 'Bull' Thompson.
"My new car leaves Miami and should be here by early next week, for the launching on Thursday at Motor Sales," said Summerbell, who have acquired a Mitsubishi car from his co-sponsor, AMS Motorsports TAI.
According to reports, the car is a nine winner on the North American time-attack circuit of a total of 12 events entered in 2007. A special team from AMS Motorsports will be at Dover to witness the event.
"I want to win the Caribbean Championship and I believe that this is the ideal car for the job," says Summerbell who is hoping to celebrate the victory in honour of his late father, David Summerbell Sr.
