How Ja can win at the Olympics
published: Saturday | May 17, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Although Jamaicans are facing a very difficult time and it is expected that this difficulty may increase by the time of the 2008 Olympics, we will be presented with a great opportunity to make the impression of a lifetime. The greatest thing about the 2008 Olympics is the fact that we can be winners without even winning a single medal!

The 2008 Olympics is supposed to be the big coming out party of the Chinese people, showing the world that another big player is in town. Therefore, they have been meticulously planning and executing this project which has an estimated cost of US$1.609 billion dollars. Expensive party, but lucky for us we are invited.

Serious matters

This invitation, however, should not be taken lightly. We should try to maximize our profile at these events, because the world will be watching China this summer and we could never, in our wildest dreams, pay for that amount of marketing. We should try to make a lasting impression by doing some simple things.

1. Send a clean contingent.

2. Ensure that housekeeping matters, such as teams and injury replacements, are known from back a yard.

3. Brand the Jamaican supporters. This can be done by giving the Jamaican section a huge flag or by giving the people in the stands a uniform look, like matching T shirts, or they could create a mosaic saying "One Love" or the national flag.

4. By all means necessary get Bob Marley's One Love to be played at some point during the games.

5. Jamaica Invest should arrange for products to be displayed throughout our participation.

6. The Ministry of Agriculture should ensure that our fruits get showcased and tasted.

These are simple things that could go a far way in marketing our island at this year's games.

We can do it. Yes, we can.

I am, etc.,
