Issue: Everyone must help fight crime
published: Saturday | May 17, 2008

I am writing this in response to some things I have read as to how Jamaica can combat the escalating crime problem. I have read where someone said Jamaica needs "Divine intervention", that we should pray for Jamaica.

Some people blame people not working and having too much time on their hands; people putting their total faith in the Government and security personnel to solve the problem. I have yet to hear someone say "WE ALL NEED TO DO OUR PART".

People factor

Where is the people factor, the I need to be my part of the solution and not looking for God, politicians, and security to resolve the problem? I truly believe that when every single citizen of Jamaica is totally fed up with the crime and violence and decide to do something about it, we will see a decline.

People are not at that level, the majority are waiting for some miracle to happen.

No one wants to get involved, either because of fear or not caring enough about their fellowman/woman. People would rather turn a blind eye to a crime because no one wants to be known as an "INFORMER".

Also the fear of becoming the next victim makes it difficult to report things. Some people, I feel, love the sensational stories as something to talk about.

To everyone I say stop being a spectator and get involved, stop waiting for God to solve the problem because God helps those who help themselves. Become an active part of the solution. In order to climb a mountain you have to start with the first step.
