Wrist injury keeps T&T's Jones out
published: Wednesday | May 14, 2008

Trinidad and Tobago's Kenwyne Jones - File

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad

(CMC):

Trinidadian marksman Kenwyne Jones will miss his country's international friendly against England after breaking his wrist in Sunderland's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on the final day of the English Premiership on Sunday.

Sunderland manager Roy Keane confirmed that Jones would be out for six weeks after sustaining the injury in the freak accident during a challenge in the first half of the match at the Stadium of Light.

Out for six weeks

"It's a cracked wrist and he's going to be out for something like six weeks," Keane said. "He's going to need a cast on the injured wrist. It was a bit of a freak injury, but they happen in football."

Trinidad & Tobago's Soca Warriors are scheduled to clash with England on June 1, with Jones expecting to have played a key role in the match.

Keane said, however, though the injury was unfortunate, it had come at a time when Sunderland could afford Jones to be out.

"It's a blow for Kenwyne and a blow for us, but if there was ever a time for it to happen, then you'd choose the last hour of the season," the former Man-chester United star said. "The injury is not too serious but it will keep him out for the next six weeks or so. After that, it will be just back to normal."

Key player

Jones was a pivotal member of Sunderland's line-up during the just-concluded Premiership season, scoring seven goals to help keep the north-east England club in the top flight.

The 23-year-old was one of the Sunderland players who Keane recently said would not be on the transfer list.
