LETTER OF THE DAY - Should parenthood belimited by licence?
published: Wednesday | May 14, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

This letter is just an added plea to the persons who have been given the responsibility to govern our nation to seriously take into consideration the future of this country as it pertains to happy-go-lucky procreation, or in other words, the persons who feel that having a child should be based only on the reality that they are free to do anything they want to.

I do not believe the creation of a life should be based on the ability of two persons' sexual skill or the fulfilment of their yearning, but rather on their capability to parent a child in providing most, if not all, the fundamentals which are needed for that child to be nurtured and cared for in an appropriate manner.

The Child Care Protection Act is like an ornament which has expired or a disregarded Psalm that has been erased from the Bible. Why is it that so little attention is paid to the fact that numerous offences are committed under this act on a daily basis? And why is it that the Government stands by helplessly in finding a solution?

Police kept busy

Our police are expected to take charge in enforcing the laws of the land, but the police are busy dealing with other issues and trying to stay alive, while our nation's children are there becoming weapons of mass destruction and a pipeline through which crime and violence have escalated.

I am seeking intelligent answers, and to eventually make thriving solutions and so far, I have one really intriguing one: license parents. The license-parents solution is not to put a stop order on how many children one should have, but to ensure that the process of procreation is met with some legal examination and understanding of a parent's responsibility and commitment to his or her child.

We pay so much attention to things of material value, such as cars and firearms, yet the creation of a life gets little, or in some cases, no attention at all.

Should the jobless have children? Jobless in this sense means: Has never worked or is not working, does not intend to work, however, is very much capable of working.

Jobless people

How can it be that jobless people are allowed to have children with no sort of financial income and we expect the child to be properly nurtured?

How can it be that people are allowed to have children when they are not able to provide a suitable place to live, or in some cases, live nowhere at all? If we continue to ignore these important aspects of existence and continue this looseness with the procreation of lives, we will eventually collapse long before we become a developed country.

I am, etc.,
