St Georges remain in top league
published: Monday | May 12, 2008

Gareth Davis, Freelance Writer

St Georges 1

(Denroy Dennis 33rd)

Reno 0

A 33rd-minute strike by Denroy Dennis was enough for St Georges of Portland to secure their position in top flight local football next season.

St Georges ended the season with 44 points, one more than Seba who were relegated after they lost to Arnett Gardens (46 points) yesterday. August Town who had earlier been relegated beat Village United 4-3.

Facing a do or die situation at their home ground Lynch Park, in Buff Bay Georges started the first half in an attacking mood over Reno FC, who were forced to play a defensive role.

Relentless attacks

Playing as if their lives were at stake, Omar Henderson, Omar Brissett, Danian Reid, Denroy Dennis, and Damian Harwood, kept the Reno defence busy with repeated attacks. Georges' relentless attacks finally paid off in the 33rd minute when Dennis beat the advancing goalkeeper.

St Georges continue to dominate the first half, but poor finishing by Harwood denied them a second goal.

Reno dominated the early minutes of the second half and should have scored on at least two occasions. Several good moves by Obrian Woodbine, Renorio Downswell, Nicholy Finlayson, and Omar Johnson, threatened to derail the efforts of their opponents.

The last fifteen minutes, however, saw Georges clawing their way back into the game and should have scored a second goal, when Harwood squandered a chance with only Reno's goalkeeper to beat.

Winning coach Geoffrey Maxwell praised his team for the hard-fought victory and explained that the team was physically and mentally prepared for the game.

"I have successfully completed my part of the job," he said. "Georges are still in the league for next season and that is what matters."

Reno's Wendell Downswell, had high praise for his young team.

"Reno will be the team to watch next season," Downswell said. "We will be ready and prepared tactically, physically, and mentally."
