Danza Hyatt ... scored solid 91 for St Catherine - file
The Westmoreland Wizards temporarily staved off relegation from the Jamaican Super League, as they booted the Jamaica Defence Force to the Senior Cup after securing first innings points at the Alpart Sports Club in St Elizabeth yesterday.
However, Westmoreland are not quite out of the woods yet, as they will now face the second placed team from the Senior Cup in a play-off. The winners and runners-up from the island's second tier competition have not yet been decided.
Chasing a first innings total of 351 for seven declared, the JDF were dismissed for 230. Berreston Reid led the way for the army men with a knock of 49, Jermaine Edwards made 32, while Mel Wint scored 26. Carfton Clarke was the pick of the Westmoreland bowlers finishing with figures of four for 32, Nyron Wilson had three for 68 and Adrian Thompson finished with two for 31. Batting a second time Westmoreland, led by 52 not out from Nicoy Samuels, were 77 for four.
Celebration
At Port Esquivel champions, St Catherine celebrated in fine style with an outright win over St Elizabeth. Chasing St Elizabeth 294, St Catherine spurred on by a solid knock of 91 from Danza Hyatt racked up 334. Odean Brown was also handy with the bat scoring 47 and Andre Russell hit 36. Alton Beckford took five for 117 for St Elizabeth, Howard Powell two for 82 while Davion Davidson finished with two for 34.
Batting for a second time St Elizabeth were bowled out for 137. Shane Powell top- scored with 66 while Shawn Findlay made 22. Odean Brown did most of the damage as he snatched four for 21. Devon Brown took three for 45 and Wayne Morgan two for 28. The champions, who were presented with a cheque for $1 million after the match, then coasted to 101 for one to wrap up an easy victory, when they returned to the crease. Junior Stewart on 54 and Wayne Morgan on 33 were the not out batsmen.
Winning note
At the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium Trelawny also ended the season on a winning note with an outright win over Kingston.
After destroying Kingston for 146 on Saturday the home team, resuming on 173 for five dismissed for 225. Oral Rankie added 27 to the overnight total while Carlington Johnson had 22. Fabian Forbes three for 51 and Paul Harrison two for 47 took most wickets for Kingston. Batting a second time Kingston were skittled out for 121, with Simon Jackson top scoring with 34. Kemar Allen bagged five for 51 while Lorenzo Ingram took four for 20. Set 43 runs to win Trelawny finished the game on 46 for two.
At Melbourne Oval the home team wrapped up second spot and $400,000 with first innings points over Manchester. Resuming on 78 and chasing 401 set by Melbourne, Manchester were all out for 318. Daniel Ricketts top scored with 65 while Kairy Graham and Ziggy Levy made 63 each. Yannick Elliot took eight for 93 for Melbourne while Niekita Miller snatched two for 93. Batting a second time Melbourne were 152 for six at the close of play. Donovan Pagon 35 and Damion Henry 32 were the not out batsmen while Nieve McNally with three for 40 and Dwight Stewart two for 30 took the wickets for Manchester.
