Amend the law
published: Monday | May 12, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

It is highly unfortunate that an exemplary public servant such as Danville Walker, who has been the country's best director of elections, to date, will no longer be serving in that important position. The basis of his resignation brings into serious question the wisdom of the laws concerning the sworn allegiance of public officials to a foreign power.

Laws relevance

In today's globalised world where Jamaica's political philosophy has followed a particular path over nearly the past three decades, the laws such as the one contained in Section 40 subsection 2 of the Jamaican Constitution have become outdated and need to be either amended or removed from the books.

Because of this particular law, Jamaica is being deprived of the talents and skills of two hard-working, loyal and patriotic Jamaicans who are dedicated to the betterment of their country. Is this wise or foolish?

I am, etc.,
