The Editor, Sir:
Casino gambling will reap huge economic gains for Jamaica. But, is economic gain worth sacrificing morality? What price will be paid for this economic gain? casino gambling, or any kind of gambling for that matter, does absolutely nothing to strengthen the moral fibre of the national life of a country. Instead, such entities will weaken the moral foundation of the nation. Gambling takes away from the ideal of doing hard work.
In a country that has one of the world's highest murder rates per capita, countless rum bars, organised gangs, countless betting shops, etc., is weakening the already weak moral foundation of the nation a wise or foolish choice? Even if Jamaica did not have any of these problems, introducing casino gambling would still prove to be a morally regressive move.
