The Editor, Sir:We live in a society today that blames everyone else for the myriad of societal woes with teachers getting most of the blame. Can we really blame our teachers for all the academic and behavioural problems that plague our students?
There are several factors that are responsible for the holistic development of these youths; most of which are primarily external, that is, they are outside of the scope of the teachers' sphere.
Some of the factors that when intertwined successfully can produce well-adjusted offspring are: proper parenting, strong family ties; strong role models, positive peer pressure, wholesome communities and economic support.
Significant disadvantage
If these factors are not given due consideration, the child will be at a significant disadvantage. For instance, if the student does not have lunch money, he/she simply cannot retain the material taught on a hungry stomach.
We should hail the teachers who seek to transform lives in meaningful ways. Instead of pronouncing us guilty, help us to renew the minds of these children which are in fact the nation's responsibility so that they can bring about positive and lasting changes in this country.
