The Editor, Sir:Once again the Church has pushed its head where it doesn't belong. My purpose is not to outline the benefits and disadvantages of this latest move by the government, but to highlight the intentions of the Church in affecting the normal process of governance.
Early this year, the Church advocated against the issuing of condoms in secondary schools, saying it was immoral and against the principles of ethical society. Now it is gambling, and the possible repercussions that will plague our little island Jamaica.
Moral conduct vs governance
I believe there is a difference between what is moral conduct and governance, and this is where the Church seems to cross the line. The Church needs to understand that governing a country for the betterment of its people may lead to breaches of ethical principles, but that is a decision the leaders will have to weigh. It was unethical to wage war on Iraq, but the US means was justified.
The shaping of public policy should have the people at the heart, but not beyond the point where their influence exceeds that of the Government. The church plays a very important role in our society. The opinions of the Church should be appreciated; whatever can be drawn from it, so be it, but that is where it should stop.
I am, etc,
