Performer of the week - Well worth the wait

IT IS often said that good things come to those who wait and for Nikita Miller; that couldn't have been more true and come at a better time.

In four years of playing first-class cricket, Miller's best performance before last weekend was 4-6, but in his last match, the final of the Carib Beer Challenge Final against Trinidad and Tobago at Sabina Park, the left-arm spinner had two five-fors.

He ended the second innings with 5-92 which, apart from his 5-29 in the first innings, was good enough to earn him The Gleaner Top Performer of the Week crown for the second straight week.

Miller, who hails from the Williamsfield district in north-east St Elizabeth was excited after his match-winning achievement, which helped Jamaica thrash T&T in three days.

Long time coming

"It's been a long time coming and I must say that I'm really, really elated," Miller said. "I'm really, really happy. I've been working really hard this season, and I'm very grateful."

In the end, Miller, who must now fancy himself for a call-up to the West Indies team, finished the season with 42 wickets, one more than T&T off-spinner Amit Jagger-nauth. It was the second time in his four-year career that Miller has ended as the top wicket-taker.

In the second innings, Miller claimed the scalps of Adrian Barath (33), Daren Bravo (one), Keiron Pollard (20), Denesh Ramdin (six) and Dave Mohammed (57).

"If the (WI) coach or the selectors see it fit, then they will select me. I can't say that I deserve a game or not. So I'll just wait and see what they'll do," said Miller who played one match for the West Indies 'A' team on the 2005 tour of Sri Lanka.
