St James TT

This year's St James Parish Table Tennis Championships will be staged today at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.

The tournament will be played under new sponsors this year, namely the JTTA and three Montego Bay companies, Northwest Development, Trinity Pharmacy and Clinicare Pharmacy.

As usual, the tournament will be divided into two sections - one section for St James parish players only while the other is open to players from anywhere in the island.

The events

Events to be contested in the St James section include men's and women's singles, male and female over-40 singles, male and female under-21 singles, plus boys' and girls' singles for age-groups Under-18, Under-15 and Under-12. There will also be, for the first time, novice male and female singles for players who have never played a tournament before.

Events in the Open section are the men's and women's singles, aimed at attracting top national players to the tournament.

Registration will start at 9:00 a.m. with play beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The winner of the men's and women's singles this year will receive $10,000 and $5,000, respectively, with the runners-up getting $5,000 and $2,500.

Twelve Stars lift title

Preseason favourites Twelve Stars captured the JPS/St James Intermediate Netball Rally by defeating Starlight B 10-4 in the final played at MoBay Cricket Club recently.

In the first semi-final, Twelve Stars edged Nampel 5-4. The second semi-final between Starlight B and Destiny could be considered the match of the day as the game went into overtime after a 7-7 tie at the end of regulation time. Starlight B went on to win 9-7.

In the final, Starlight B proved to be no match for Twelve Stars as Antoinette Reid (MVP and leading goalscorer) led her team to a deserved victory.

Vastly improved

The fixtures are completed with Sandals Negril Beach Resort and Spa hoping to rebound from a recent loss when they host sister property Beaches Negril Resort and Spa and Sunset Jamaica Grande trying to revive their slim quarter-final aspirations when they host newcomers Gran Bahia Principe in Ocho Rios. Both of these matches start at 4:00 p.m.
