Makeup your mind - Mineral vs traditional: which one's better?
published: Saturday | May 3, 2008

Keisha Brown, Style Writer

Mineral make-up is the latest addition to the new beauty culture dedicated to better living. Unlike traditional make-up, mineral varieties contain no perfumes, talc, alcohol, dyes, mineral oil or preservatives. They are based on a hypoallergenic loose powder that naturally nourishes the skin.

Despite all of its great pluses, mineral make-up has its fans and its critics. The fans rave about its light, natural, long-lasting glow that simply can't be duplicated by traditional make-up.

But critics claim that it is a genius marketing plan - a new way of selling women the same ingredients that have been in make-up for years. Regardless of the negative views, here's how traditional make-up stacks up against mineral make-up.

Despite different brand names and marketing strategies, most mineral make-up have remarkably similar ingredients. With so little variation in actual ingredients, choose the brand which caters to your specific skin type.

Traditional

Traditional make-up: Revlon Colorstay Foundation.

1. Traditional make-up is often heavier than mineral make-up and with additional coverage can feel like a mask on your face.

2. Traditional powders can cake in areas where fine lines exist. This creates the illusion of deeper lines, making one look older.

3. Most traditional make-up products are petroleum-based and contain filler ingredients which can clog pores and irritate skin.

4. Most traditional make-up require many reapplications during the day.

Mineral

Mineral products, from Maybelline New York, including foundations, concealers and blushes.

1. It's great for sensitive skin. It is a breakthrough for women who struggle with acne, allergies, dryness and clogged pores.

2. It does not feel like a mask. Mineral make-up has a lighter texture, allowing your skin to breathe. So, even with more coverage, you still see a natural radiance.

3. Mineral make-up contains ingredients that are good for your skin. Minerals such as zinc, magnesium and aluminium refresh, rejuvenate and relax the skin.

4. It does not enhance wrinkles as traditional powders do. Mineral make-up creates a glowing appearance because of the essential vitamins and antioxidants present.

5. Mineral make-up protects skin from the sun. Its zinc oxide offers natural UVA and UVB protection.

6. It makes skin look better. Mineral make-up looks and feels as though you're wearing nothing on your face.
