Power of Faith Seniors need a prayer

Power of Faith Seniors will need a powerful prayer to reach this year's semi-finals of the Power of Faith Ministries Twenty20 Church Cricket League after their shock 55-run loss to Mandeville New Testament last Saturday.

Ironically, Power of Faith Seniors will have to depend on the same team that beat them (Mandeville) for a chance to advance. Mandeville meet Miracle Open Bible in a 11:30 a.m. match at Lime Tree Oval today.

Mandeville, Zone One leaders with maximum eight points from two matches, have already qualified and their only motivation for this game is to top the zone, while Miracle need a win to advance to the next round. A loss for Miracle (six points) would see the defending champions Power of Faith (six) going to the next round with a superior net run-rate.

The other two semi-finalists from the next Zone are Braeton New Testament (eight) and Power of Faith Development (eight). Faith Temple, also with eight points were eliminated, just losing out to the Development team that had a better net run-rate.

The JBA/INSPORTS St Catherine Primary Mini Basketball League has reached its semi-final stage following the playing of the quarter-finals at the Edgewater Community Centre in Portmore, St Catherine.

Leading the qualifiers are St John's Primary, Marlie Mount 'A' and 'B' and Greater Portmore.

St John's Primary and Marlie Mount 'A' topped their semi-final groups, with two wins and no losses, and Marlie Mount 'B' and Greater Portmore advanced as runners-up with one win and a loss.

In Zone A, St John's Primary beat Mount Moreland 14-6 and Greater Portmore 14-9, while Greater Portmore outscored Mount Moreland 6-2. In Zone B, Marlie Mount 'A' got by Independence City 10-7 and Marlie Mount 'B' 6-4, while Marlie Mount 'B' beat Independence City 10-8 in double overtime. The semi-finals are scheduled for this Thursday.

Wray & Nephew skittles

Dragon and Eastern All-Stars, both from East Kingston, won their opening round Wray & Nephew-sponsored skittles encounters last Sunday at Dragon Skittles Club, Rollington Town, in contrasting fashion.

Contesting the Premier League, Dragon defeated the recent Pattex Cup champions Meadowvale, who surprisingly turned up without their full contingent of players and paid the price.

Meadowvale fought back from a 0-2 deficit to lead 3-2 and eventually 5-3. But Dragon capitalised on their misfortune to win 6-5. In the curtain-raiser, Eastern All-Stars made short work of Cherry's Strikers, handing them an 8-2 whipping in the second Premier League encounter. Cherry's, playing without their captain and two-time singles champion Robert 'World Man' Mickey, looked out of sorts and their feeble challenge was brushed aside.

In the two Major League matches at House of Peace Skittles Club, Berwick Road in Whitfield Town, home team House of Peace beat Olympic Strikers 8-3 while Portmore's The Dip also got by newcomers Mercury 8-3.

The competition continues tomorrow with a double-header at Fisher's Place, 57 Lyndhurst Road, Mercury will oppose Waltham Strikers while Dragon are up against Eastern in their 'battle of the east' clash. And over in Gregory Park, The Dip host House of Peace and Mystix take on Cherry's Strikers. All matches start at 1:00 p.m.

The traditional bottom-of-the-table match in the Portmore/St Catherine domino league for the Colin Fagan Trophy, donated by the MP for South East St Catherine, takes place tomorrow between Ken's Wildflower and New Look. The match will be played at the Edgewater Community Centre starting at 11:30 a.m. and will embrace 300 points.
