COK Champions Cup heats up
published: Wednesday | April 16, 2008

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

TIVOLI GARDENS will match skills against giant-killers Granville while Village United tackle Waterhouse in Sunday's semi-finals of the COK Champions Cup.

A draw conducted at the Harbour View Mini Stadium on Sunday night, by representatives of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) and title sponsors COK Credit Union - led by marketing manager Cecile McCormack, confirmed the pairings as well as the venue which will be the Edward Seaga Stadium.

Village will line up to tackle Waterhouse at 4:00 p.m. while Tivoli play Granville at 6:00 p.m. in front of their home crowd.

Despite the odd situation of Granville being the home team, Tivoli will look for a chance to duplicate their success in the 2005- '06 season, which saw them lift the title after an exciting 3-2 win over then defending champions Portmore.

Stern challenge

However, this time around the defending champions (Portmore) have already been eliminated and Granville, a team which knocked on the door of the top flight in the play-offs last year, could provide a stern challenge.

After opening the competition with a 2-1 win over Seba, Granville went on to beat Bath 5-1, before ousting another top-flight team, Portmore (5-4 on penalties). Tivoli started at the second-round stage where they beat Barbican 2-1 before downing Harbour View 1-0.

In the day's other game, Village, who have almost put their early season slippage behind them, will play a Waterhouse team hungry for at least some measure of success this season.

Waterhouse, who also auto-matically received a spot in the second round, beat Albany 3-0 before slipping by August Town 1-0. Village registered victories over Manchioneal, Humble Lion (4-1) and St Georges (4-2).

This was the first year of the competition in which teams were required to submit bids for hosting the competition's semi-finals. Following the submission of bids, the only two venues considered to be eligible were the Edward Seaga Stadium and the Harbour View Mini Stadium.
