The Editor, Sir:
I am appalled by the decision made by the court for an individual who contributes much to the growth and wellfare of Jamaica. I am a citizen of the United States of America and a Ph.D. student in psychology. My intention is to complete my studies and sometime return to Jamaica to be an asset to my county.
However, the question is: Will I be treated in the same respect as Mr. Vaz if I was elected by the people to serve them? The laws in Jamaica have not changed and once you are a born Jamaican, you are a citizen of Jamaica wherever you go. Returning to the country of your birth should not have a price on it. And frankly, Jamaicans should be very proud of one of their own returning and making great contribution to the growth of the country.
There are a lot of Americans in Jamaica who have launched businesses all over the island. Are they being asked to give up their citizenship in America? We are a people who thrive to be fair and honest, but we seem to have lost touch with reality and purpose. We need to get back to basics and do what is right in the sight of God.
I am, etc.,
