History of a town clock
published: Monday | April 14, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

The St Ann's Bay Improvement Committee is partnering with the St Ann Parish Council to restore the town clock. When the future of the clock was being assessed, it was observed that there is an inscription on it showing that Whitehurst and Son of Derby, England, manufactured it in 1814. This would mean that it is one of the oldest clocks in the island and has some interesting features such as a rope cable dual mechanism.

St Ann's clock origin

A descendant of the Moulton Barretts felt that the clock came from the Moulton Barrett Estate in England. Elizabeth Barrett-Browning wrote an ode to the St Ann's Bay town clock. It was eventually given to an organisation which sold it.

The committee would be very grateful if the person who obtained the 'ode' could make contact by sending a note to PO Box 4443, St Ann's Bay. A rally will be held under the clock on May 22 to raise funds for the repairs.

I am, etc.,

MS K. C. GRAHAM

President
