IN THE battle of the Corporate Area giants, Kingston Tigers drew first blood by taking first innings points from Melbourne Kangaroos in a close and exciting Jamaica Super League match at Sabina Park yesterday.
After dismissing the Kangaroos for a mere 125 in the post-lunch session, the Tigers scrambled to 140. The Kangaroos, batting a second time, closed on 73-3.
Nehemiah Perry, the ex-West Indies spinner, took 6-22 and was supported by Australia-born Brendon Nash with 2-26. Only Damion Henry with 38 and Dwayne Thompson, who got 27 not out, offered any resistance for the Kangaroos.
When Kingston Tigers batted, Yanick Elliott (5-32) and Nikita Miller (4-46) combined for nine wickets. Domain Wilson, 31, and Marvin Darlington, 28, made the most runs for the hosts.
Elsewhere, at Trelawny Stadium, national player Lorenzo Ingram scored a century, but his team, Trelawny Buccaneers, and the Manchester Lions were locked in a tight battle for first innings.
Ingram's 106, which was laced with 13 fours and a six, and was backed up by Barbadian Floyd Reifer's 83, led the Buccaneers to 276. They guided the Buccaneers from 62 to 228. Manchester will resume on 65-3 this morning
Meanwhile, St. Elizabeth Shakes and St. Catherine Saints are closing in on first innings against Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and Westmoreland Wizards respectively. At Chedwin Park, The Shakes, led by good all-round performances from Wayne Simpson and Alton Beckford, find themselves with the upper hand, despite a poor batting display.
Valuable runs
Simpson, 32 not out, and Beckford, 28, put together a valuable 39-run 10th wicket stand which helped the Shakes to 185 all out. Kamal Dennis took 5-55 and Akbal Moodie 3-18.
In their turn at bat, Simpson returned figures of 3-26, Beckford 2-19 and Conroy Miller 2-25 to have JDF Brigades struggling at 108 for seven.
At Alpart, the Saints, led by half centuries from Keith Hibbert, Danza Hyatt and Dwayne Smith, are in total control against the Wizards.
Hibbert, 82, and Hyatt, 77, put on 147 for the second wicket while Barbadian Smith, 75, added 76 for the third wicket with Hibbert.
At the close, the Wizards were reeling at 61-6, replying to the Saints 333 for 5 declared. Derval Green was 22 not out.
