Karters raring to go
published: Sunday | April 13, 2008

Glenroy Sinclair, Assignment Coordinator

Since the last race meet three weeks ago the Palisadoes International Raceway in Kingston has been buzzing with activity. Last Sunday could easily have been mistaken for a regular race meet based on the large number of karters who turned out to practise.

Some were eager to test drive their newly acquired karts, while others wanted to get into top shape for the April 20 race meet and, hopefully, the Caribbean TAG series to which members of the Jamaica Karting Association (JKA) have been invited. The first meet will be held in Aruba on May 4.

According to reports from the JKA, there is also a possibility that the second round of the TAG series will be held in Jamaica during the association's international race meet which is scheduled for July 6.

Reports are that Dr Derrick McDowell, Dane Lawson, Dr Mark Minott and Jonathan Law have all acquired new AMV Italian racing karts.

Doing well

"I am expecting Jonathan to do well. Because his worst time in ractice could have easily won a race in his class," says his father, Sam Law.

Jonathan, a seven-year-old student of Christian Academy who races under the banner of New Life Pharmacy, won two races at the March 16 meet. Come next week, he will be racing in the 80cc class, which is a grade above the Baby Class.

Another parent, David Summerbell, believes his son and daughter now have a good chance of finishing in the top three in their respective classes. This is because they won't have to start at the back of the pack as rookies, this time around.

"I am hoping to fly the AMV flag very high and put on some entertaining driving for the spectators," says Peter Rae, who is the local distributor for the AMV Italian karts.
