Village United hold Sporting at Brancourt
published: Monday | April 7, 2008

Dwight Nelson, Gleaner Writer

Sporting Central Academy and Village United played to an exciting 0-0 draw in the Cash Plus Premier League at Brancourt yesterday.

It was a game in which the homesters dominated play for almost the entire match but were let down by poor finishing.

"It was an excellent performance by the Sporting Central team today although we did not score from the chances we got," coach of Sporting Central Chris Dawes said.

He added: "We created the chances but poor finishing was the order of the day so we just have to get back to the drawing board."

Easy chance missed

Ian Palmer could have pushed the Sporting Central team into the lead as early as the sixth minute when he went into the Villagers' 18-yard box but had his shot blocked by goalkeeper Kenardo Wilson. Palmer again got an easy chance to score in the 34th minute when he stole the ball from Village's Nigel Ellis in the 18-yard box. With only the goalkeeper to beat, he kicked wide of the target.

Tennyson Smith had his chance in the first half for the homesters in the 38th minute when he went into Village's goal area. However, with only the goalkeeper in his way he booted the ball over the crossbar.

Sporting Central came out after the break in the same attacking mood as they did for the first half but again poor finishes prevented them from scoring.

The Villagers came to life with four minutes of regulation time remaining and tried to make several attacks on the Sporting Central goal area in a bid to clinch the win but time ran out.

"It was a spirited performance today although we did not win the game. We had seven of our key players out for various reasons and this affected the team's performance. I must, however, commend the Sporting Central team on the quality football they played on the field, although their finishing was poor," Village coach Paul 'Tegat' Davis said.
