THE EDITOR, Sir:
All of us are very conscious of the need for saving energy and thus the globe. The media here and abroad keep pounding that in our ears. The BBC radio told us of the Australian initiative of Earth Hour whereby nations and cities (over 370 of them) decided to turn off lights for one hour. Our own Government and the parish councils need to take special notice.
Light burning day, night
This is minuscule, but behind my house, a street light has been burning night and day for over five years. This everlasting light bulb has been praised by us who never fail to bother our council. The Church of the Nazarene benefits so we call it 'heaven', as there is no light there.
I make three suggestions which I ask you in your wisdom to act on:
1) Invite the JPS to run a competition to identify the street light bulb which has the longest life in this country for a reward to the citizen's association which owns that bulb.
2) Government to recognise the parish council which shows the greatest savings in street lights over a period.
3) Public recognition by the government of the parish or constituency showing the greatest savings in energy over a period.
Everything has to be done about waste in this country.
I am, etc.,
