Duty on vehicles
published: Monday | April 7, 2008

THE EDITOR, Sir:

JAMAICA'S DUTY on vehicles must be reviewed and revised. It is biased, abusive and unfair to the general population and puts a burden on the economy by adding to inflation.

Why should I have to buy a car twice? Or even three times, based on the cost of importation? The time has come to end duty concessions. Let everyone pay their fair share of duty fees. Eliminate duty for government workers, etc.

What we need is a flat vehicle import fee of 50 per cent for everyone for all types of vehicles except for cars that get close to or over 40 mpg, then apply a 30 per cent duty fee to encourage the use of smaller, energy-efficient cars.

I am, etc.,
