WESTERN BUREAU:
Two policemen have become the latest victims of the Jamaica Constabulary Force's drive to rid the organisation of corruption.
One of the policemen has already been arrested while the other has not been seen since the alleged incident.
Police reports say the lawmen, who are attached to the Lucea Police Station in Hanover, went to a house on Saturday in Green Island in the parish where they told an occupant of the house he was wanted for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
While transporting the man to the station, they demanded $200,000 for his release.
The man directed them back to the house and gave them $50,000, which they took and left.
Immediately arrested
A report was made to the station about the incident. While the man was there, he is said to have seen one of the suspected policemen, who was immediately arrested by his colleagues.
Up to news time last night, no charges had been laid against the policeman in custody. The other policeman has not yet been held.
The police have withheld the identities of the cops.
A file is being prepared to be sent to the director of public prosecutions for a ruling. The Anti-Corruption Branch is continuing the investigation.
