The Editor, Sir:
For me, the removal of user fees in public health institutions is not much to celebrate. The free health-care policy was long overdue to the 'hard earning' taxpayers of this country; the others are just 'free riders', the ones who are really going to benefit the most. Free riders are persons who benefit from public goods (such as free health care)whether he or she pays for it or not. In this case, payment would be tax.
I am not here to deprive the Jamaican people from what is due to them, but I think it is unfair to taxpayers for what they are getting from the system relative to that of non-taxpayers, especially the ones who are willing deprive the Government of this revenue.
Free health care is not cheap. The Government will be forking out an estimated $3.5 billion to cover user fees. In addition, millions more will have to be provided to acquire medical equipment to meet the needs of the hospitals.
I appreciate the effort the tax administrators have taken to reel in the non-taxpayers. However, it is not enough. I am urging the Jamaican people to come on-board. Let us partner with the Government in realising the dream of all Jamaicans. Let us pay our taxes and contribute to the development of this country.
I am, etc.,
