The Editor, Sir:It has become a real hazard to drive anywhere in Jamaica at nights because of the very bright headlights on vehicles. I have driven around Jamaica and I find very few places where more than dipped headlights are needed. Even in areas with street lights, these glaring headlamps are on. If the sights of these drivers are so poor that they have to use such bright lights, then they should not be allowed to drive a motor vehicle day or night.
Some vehicles are driven with four or six full-beam headlights which are never even dipped for oncoming traffic. The dazzling effect of these lights may well be one of the causes of so many road accidents and fatalities which occur on our roads at nights.
It is the view of many that the Transport Authority or whichever authority with responsibility in this area must take the necessary action required to deal adequately with this issue.
Other problems that need to be tackled are improper overtaking; continuous white lines on the roads seem to mean nothing to some drivers. Traffic lights and pedestrian crossings to some drivers are put there as decorations and not for safety purposes.
I am, etc.,
