Thursday talk - Hottest topics on the cocktail circuit
published: Thursday | April 3, 2008

Extra-curricular activities

1. It is the most talked about party of the Easter weekend.

Hosted on the north coast by one of the scions of wealth and privilege, this one was a case of 'same-way so'. The word from some of those who attended is that it was just a little more than they expected as the host saw to the every need of his guests. Hear there were two kiosks provided for extra-curricular activities.

Czarina's attitude causes friction

2.They say it's her very high-handed manner and attitude that is the main source of the friction within the entity. According to one insider, her attitude is one of a czarina handing down edicts and not one of a consensus builder seeking to find a common position to keep things going.

She needs a stylist!

3.Even friends are now openly stating that she is desperately in need of a stylist. They agree that her sense of occasion is way off mark and needs some harnessing as she is becoming the butt of jokes and pundits are now starting to take bets on her ensembles.

Another falling-out

4.Word doing the rounds is that Lola and her political friends have had another falling-out, and this time it seems that the wound is more than superficial.

A tutor for the God-daughter

5.Some are asking that the etiquette experts be called in to tutor the god-daughter in the business that has been thrust upon her to avoid the faux pas that was the case of the grand outing the other day.

Coming to blows

6.They say the wife and the widowed one, with the résumé of liaisons with regional heads, came to blows the other day.

Stretching himself thin

7.They say he went to his former friends and business associates demanding a 25 per cent stake in the business and, when his demands were rebuffed, he then set up a competing entity. There are concerns, however, that he might be stretching himself way too thin.

Advisers not all convinced

8.Six months into the life of the new administration and the naysayers are still talking about the need for fresh elections to solidify the grip on power. Not all the advisers are convinced, however, that fresh elections will shore up the numbers. In fact, some say it might create greater instability and might just serve to really weaken an already marginal majority.

Was it political?

9.Was the rush to make the arrest before the DPP had a chance to rule a part of the political agenda?

Crisis of confidence

10.Seems like some pre-election promises made and word given have led to naught, so, the backers are now very wary and want nothing to do with those who have backed away from commitments given. Some are calling it a crisis of confidence. Others are less than kind in their pronouncements and are busy writing political epitaphs!
