Suspended policeman still on the job
published: Thursday | April 3, 2008

WESTERN BUREAU:

There is uncertainty surrounding the status of Detective Constable Carey Lyn-Sue, the policeman who was ordered suspended by Police Commissioner Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin after he admitted in court that he had fabricated evidence in a murder trial.

According to several colleagues of the policeman, despite the commissioner's suspension order, Detective Constable Lyn-Sue continues to turn up at the Area One Police Accident Reconstruction and Investigative Unit in Montego Bay.

"I don't know who is the responsible officer, in terms of carrying out the commissioner's instructions, but the instructions have not been carried out," one policeman who asked not to be identified told The Gleaner.

In the meantime, Karl Angell, communications director at the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), says Constable Lyn-Sue's suspension remains in effect.

"The matter is still under investigation at this time and all stand as is," he said.

Still showing up for work

Following the interview with Angell, The Gleaner again checked with the Area One Police headquarters and several persons confirmed that Constable Lyn-Sue was still showing up for work and performing his usual duties.

"People are whispering about it but nobody seems prepared to ask about it at the official level," one policeman said.

While appearing as a witness in a murder case against Jason James of a Granville address in St James, Constable Lyn-Sue stunned the court by stating that he fabricated evidence against James. He subsequently confessed that he had become a Christian and felt compelled to speak the truth.

Following his admission, which resulted in James' lawyer making a successful no-case submission to the court, Commissioner Lewin ordered the immediate suspension of Constable Lyn-Sue and a review of all the cases he had dealt with.

The policeman has since received support from some quarters for admitting that he lied in the case, but several of his colleagues have chastised him and accused him of trying to bring the JCF into disrepute.
