The Editor, Sir:I am currently employed to an agency in one of the government ministries. I am opposing/rejecting the offer of the proposed 22 per cent increase over the period April 2008 to March 2010. With inflation expecting to be at 18 per cent at March 31, 2008, how does the Government expect a 16 per cent increase to offset the increased cost of living - not to mention a six per cent increase for the period 2009/2010.
Is the Government ready to assure the public sector that it will guarantee inflation in keeping with their proposed increases. Come on. Was it not some months ago that the "Government" received a 20 per cent increase. Think about it - what is 16 per cent of $804,000.00 per annum to achieve. One child in high school, one going to an infant school and I am enrolled at one of our universities. JPS and NWC requesting increases. Food prices are spiralling out of control. JUTC soon ask for an increase. Health care gone up and don't insult me about free hospital. Though you don't pay with cash, you do with your valuable time not to mention the abuse meted out by the health care providers.
I am not asking for 100 per cent increase in salary, but if all the Government can offer is 22 per cent over two years, do something about inflation. I do not want to hear about the malnutritioned country that you inherited, fix it and make this island liveable.
I am, etc.,
