Teachers, seek 'a better life'
published: Friday | March 28, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I have noticed that in the face of this massive recruitment of teachers many opinions are surfacing, many of them highly critical of the United States education system and of teachers.

As a teacher, I did not wish to migrate to the US in the first recruitment of 2001 for personal reasons.

However, many of my colleagues took advantage of the opportunity.

Some came back after the first two years with little to no regrets for having gone. Still, others remain to this day and are enjoying the experience. They are indeed grateful for the opportunity.

Strive for better life

I personally would like to encourage my fellow teachers to strive for a better life. The education system all across the world is fraught with problems given the changing nature of the world in which we live.

Standards in Jamaica have been allowed to slide to an alarmingly shameful level, with adults and children alike being expected to accept little to no responsibility for their actions.

The infrastructure is in place in the US to address delinquency and culpable behaviour in adults and children when things go wrong as they are wont to do.

As to the question of patriotism, how unpatriotic is a person who sends their money back 'home'?

I am hoping and trusting that the powers that be will not decide to step in with some trumped up reason to try to obstruct and infringe the rights of Jamaicans to access a higher standard of living.

As the proverb goes, 'tief no love fe se tief carry long bag'.

I am, etc.,

C. SMITH
