Dixon wants tighter defending from Portmore
published: Tuesday | March 25, 2008

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

Roen Nelson...scored two goals. - File

Roen Nelson slammed in his 13th and 14th goals of the season to catapult Portmore United back to the top of the Cash Plus Premier League (CPPL) standings, following a comfortable 3-1 come from behind victory over August Town at Ferdie Nieta Park on Sunday night.

With his team having netted a league leading 42 goals, Portmore coach Linval Dixon believes buckling down on the defensive side of the pitch will be key if the team is to lift the title.

"We have been getting the goals but the thing we really want to concentrate on is our defense, we have been letting in too many goals, that's where we've come up a little short," he said.

The home team was found wanting in early action when central midfielder Aphas Bernard fired the visitors into the lead in the second minute.

Despite positive play from the bottom-placed team, which saw Daniel Shaw and Mitchily Waul force saves from Portmore 'keeper Shawn Sawyers, the home team never looked rattled.

Nelson, the league's top scorer, struck for times when the teams last met and once again proved the proverbial thorn as he muscled his way in-between the August Town last pair before firing a bouncing ball past 'keeper Devon Haughton.

Dominating possession

While dominating possession, Portmore found the go-ahead goal when Anthony Bennett raced to the near post to head home a 41st minute Rudolf Austin corner kick.

Picking up right where they left off in the first period, the home team comfortably passed the ball around before picking apart a rapidly tiring August Town almost at will.

Nelson completed his brace when he snuck past a napping August Town back line before heading past a stranded Haughton in the 70th minute.

In time added a fiercely struck effort by Michael Binns could have made things worse for the visitors but the effort ricochet off the post.

"We were pressing too high and in the end we just ended up giving them too much room," said August Town coach, Dominique Spaulding.

"We did play fairly well against the leaders today though. If we keep it up we can get some results against some of the lower teams," he added.

Though tied with Tivoli Gardens on 53 points, Portmore lead the standings on goal difference, while August Town remain last on 26.
