Road march stamina
published: Monday | March 24, 2008

Get the most out of the activity by following the simple steps outlined below. - Winston Sill/Freelance Photographer

For many Jamaicans, carnival is their favourite time of the year. Some prepare by going to socarobics every Friday night to get in shape. Others hit the gym to shed those extra pounds or make the lungs stronger. But whatever you did or didn't do for road march, here are a few tips to make sure you are able to jump up and get on bad all day long.

One

Keep hydrated: Make sure you have bottled water at hand to rehydrate as you sweat away.

Two

Dress in cool clothing. Whether you're participating in the march or just a spectator, cool comfortable clothing is a must.

Three

Hats, caps, visors and sunglasses are mandatory.

Four

Comfortable sandals or sneakers should be your feet's best friend for the day.

Five

A good meal. Before the start, make sure you've had a well-balanced meal not just something that you grabbed quickly.

Six

Energy drink. Keeping energised is definitely necessary to get the best out of the activity. Energy drinks such as Gatorade and vitamin waterare highly recommended.

Seven

Sunblock. You are not the only one who will be out to party, so will the sun, so protect your skin.

Eight

Do not allow any of the other drunk, tipsy, high or overexuberant revellers to engage in illicit sexual acts with you on the road, it's bad for your health.

Nine

Take refuge in any shade possible. Prolonged exposure to the sun is dangerous.

Ten

Make sure you are well rested the night before.
