Racers revved up for Dover
published: Sunday | March 23, 2008

Like an action-packed movie, the Dover Raceway in St Ann is expected to buzz with non-stop excitement when the nation's top race drivers renew their rivalry at the track tomorrow.

"I am ready and sharp like a razor," said a smiling Tedroy 'Teddy' Burton. "My Honda Civic is mad again and coming back with a different attitude," Burton explains.

He is one of the two drivers who are expected to challenge Doug Gore, Jamaica's and the Caribbean's number-one rated driver. The other is Peter 'Bull' Thompson who celebrated his 57th birthday yesterday.

"I will be competitive as usual, but at this meet I am coming to have fun. I have not done many changes to the car, just some minor things and I hope that is enough to stay close to Gore," Thompson told Automotives on Wednesday.

Every driver has been working round-the-clock, getting his car ready for the clashes. They are coming all out to beat the MoBay based Gore, which will not be an easy task.

"Let them catch me if they can," boasted Gore.

For this meet, he will be equipped with a lighter and more powerful version of Mitsubishi's Lancer Evolution series, having sold his championship-winning Evolution 8 in Guyana last year.

"If they believe the Evo 8 was fast, then they should check out the Evo 5. This new car is going to make the Evo 8 look slow," Gore said.

Matthew Gore, who is now racing professionally in the United Kingdom, flew into the island on Monday, specifically for tomorrow's race meet. He is expected to demonstrate what he has learnt so far in England.

According to Dean Corrodus, word coming out of the major race and speed stables is that all competitors have corralled more ponies in an effort to have the highest horsepower machines to unleash come race day. He said the 1.6-mile Dover track, equivalent to 12.8 furlongs, may look more like a horse race with a couple hundred horses under each bonnet battling for position.

Christopher 'Teach' McFarlane, who is responsible for the Dover Racing School, said at least 15 new cars will be there.

"Dover will be awesome. We are expecting about 10 new competitors in the IP45 Class, plus some long-time competitors, like Junior Barnes, will be coming back," said McFarlane.

In the meantime, David Summerbell stressed that for this meet he will be just competing for points.

"This meet I will be racing my rally car and the Magnum prototype car," said Summerbell.

Another driver to watch is Peter Rae who, according to reports, has upgraded a RX7 Mazda, which has not raced in five years.

"I am now adding the finishing touch," said Rae.
