Go-kart race meet: Bumper-to-bumper spectacle
published: Sunday | March 23, 2008

Last week's go-kart race meet at the Palisadoes track was hailed a big success. - Contributed

Peter Rae, Mark Anthony Eaton, Philip Myers and Peter 'PJ' Moodie, all shared in the spotlight of last Sunday's Jamaica Karting Association (JKA) go-kart race meet, held at the Palisadoes International Raceway, Kingston.

Apart from the spills and thrills, the bumper-to-bumper rivalry and dare-devil like over-taking, the day's spectacle had the crowd screaming. Parents and relatives of the participants, especially the young karters, kept their eyes glued to the track, as the karts circled the course, lap after lap.

It was like a cat and mouse game between Peter Rae and Mario Mair in the third and final Rotax Masters event of the day. Each time Mair passed Rae, the latter allowed him to enjoy but a short lead, before speeding up and taking the lead. It continued like this, until Mair got the advantage and took the checkered flag.

Tired

"Fatigue stepped in at about the 10th lap, plus I spent the entire lunch hour tuning Samantha Summerbell's kart, which had developed problems earlier in the day. After that I was very exhausted," said the veteran Rae, explaining why he had lost the race.

Joel Jackson was also looking smart, over-taking impressively, in the Rotax International Class. Another surprise winner on the card was Jonathan Law, who was winning his first in the Baby Class.

"It was enjoyable, good racing, a lot of excitement," this was how Neil Williams, president of the JKA, described last weekend's meet.

David Summerbell who has two children competing in the sport, believed it was a well organised meet.

"With so many youngsters involved now, the future looks good for Jamaica. Go-Kart is a great family sport,"said Summerbell.

After last Sunday's meet, the challenge for the Abe Ziadie Memorial Trophy and driver of the year title is now being closely contested. For example; Phillip Myers, 'PJ' Moodie and Colin Daley all finished with 148 points for the day. They dominated the Rotax Junior, Shifter and Rotax Minimax Classes respectively. Peter Rae, Andre Anderson and Mark Anthony Eaton ended the day with 141 points in the Rotax Masters, Rotax International and Baby Classes.

The next race is scheduled for Sunday, April 20.
