Pick-9 payout could hit $3 million mark
published: Thursday | March 20, 2008

With the Pick-9 boasting a $1.68 million carryover at Caymanas Park on Saturday, a payout of close to $3 million looks a real possibility.

The Pick-9 embraces races three to 11, while the Super-6 runs from race five to 10 on the 11-race programme.

We look at the Super-6 which gets underway with a 3-y-o restricted allowance II (non winners of two) over 1100 metres to be contested by eight starters.

It promises to be quite competitive with the likes of THE GUARDIAN, FIRST TIME LUCKY, LIMA'S BIGBADBOY, PASS LINE and MACHISMO, who heads the scales with 57.0kg under title-chasing jockey Shane Ellis, the leading lights.

He Dwight Chen-trained FIRST TIME LUCKY showed marked improvement when scoring easily in post-to-post fashion over 1200 metres on February 16 and having worked well, this chestnut gelding by Market Rally out of Oh Say Lucky is tipped to follow at the expense of Philip Feanny's LIMA'S BIGBADBOY, who beat all barring WHEEL N DEAL over the straight five course on March 8.

Percy Martin Memorial Cup

Next on the programme is Division II of the 3-y-o maiden special for the Percy Martin Memorial Cup over the straight five course to be contested by 12 starters. Here again trainer Dwight Chen and five-time champion jockey, Trevor Simpson, holds the key with the filly MARIA ELENA, who has shown good speed in her three races so far.

She found 1300-metre on the tall side when giving way in the last furlong on February 23, eventually finishing seven lengths seventh to DANCINGWITHESTARS. MARIA ELENA has worked well in preparation for this trophy, galloping from the gate in 1:00.3 on Monday morning, the last half mile in 47.1.

She has most to fear from the lightly raced MR. BLAIR who was all the rage on his recent debut, but walked out of the starting gate and went down in a three-way photo finish to TRACKING DEVICE over 1400 metres.

The seventh race (claiming $380,000-$330,000) over 1400 metres should resolve itself into a straight fight between the front running SPACESAVER and OLE KING COLE, both fit animals.

SPACESAVER failed in his attempt to make all on March 12 when caught close home by TWENTY NINE over the round five course. Although he will relish the easier pace of this race, OLE KING COLE (Simpson up) has a bit more appeal, having failed by half a length to catch UNCLE D & ME over 1400 metres on February 9. Given the additional 200 metres of this race, he gets the nod over SPACESAVER in the nine-strong field.

Ideal trip

Briefly, ALI SPENDER, who has been knocking at the door recently, gets the ideal trip (1600m) in the eighth race and should prove too strong for CAPTAIN BONE, RAMADA and recent winner SOY MUJER in a field of 11.

Then, take the consistent SLOGAN to stave off old rival CHIPONYOURSHOULDER and recent winner HAIL THE GENIUS in the ninth and fleet-footed CLOCK WORK to repeat last year's success in the 10th race for the Arthur Jones Memorial Cup - graded stakes feature over 1200 metres - where the recent grade one winner RAMPAGE and ROMEZ are twin dangers.
