The Editor, Sir:I would like on behalf of Soroptimist International of Jamaica (Kingston Club) to applaud Mr Thwaites for his motion in Parliament to register fathers. In the early '70s the Civic Committee of The Soroptimist Club recommended that this be done. The same objections that are being raised now were also raised at that time and it was never legalised.
The recommendation has now come from a male and it has at least reached Parliament. We were a female group lobbying outside of Parliament although government ministers were contacted. Members of that committee were Ena Collymore Woodstock, Gloria Cumper, Leila Wynter Wedderburn, and Winnifred Hewitt. We do hope that this time around the motion will be successful.
I am, etc.,
