Outlook Youth- Danger in the chat room
published: Sunday | March 16, 2008

Demar Tracey, Outlook Youth Writer

Socialisation has increased tremendously through the creation of chat rooms. And with millions of unscrupulous persons 'chatting', danger is always present. However, some users may not be aware of this.

Scenario: So, after giving it some thought and succumbing to peer pressure, you finally decide to join a (another) chat room. Filled with excitement about your latest pastime activity, you now become neglectful of the fact that you:

SHOULD

  • Use an alias

Fay, 18. "Changing your name should be your first line of security, and changing it every now and then wouldn't be such a bad idea either."

  • Pay close attention to certain remarks

Taneish, 20. "You really have some psychotic persons in this world, so when somebody tells you under any circumstances for that matter, that they are going to kill you or coming to get you, that's where the fun stops."

  • Expect the unexpected

Roderick, 21. "I wouldn't advise persons who are not open minded to join chat rooms, because some of the users are extremely bold, and can come across as being offensive. Persons are from different backgrounds and they can be extremely bold."

  • Read the terms before you agree to them

Wallace, 19. "I'm almost certain that nobody does that in Jamaica, because we don't like to read, but I guess if we did then we wouldn't be shocked when we saw certain comments being made."

    AND, YOU SHOULD NEVER

  • Give personal information

Iona, 17. "Age, address, email, address and phone numbers are not to be disclosed to anybody at any time!"

  • Send or display images of yourself

Fabio, 23. "Copying and pasting is like an art nowadays, so if you see yourself in pictures like the ones being circulated now it's hard to say that it's not you."

  • Agree to meet anyone without security

Brandy, 22. "You don't know who exactly you are going to meet so take a few friends with you if you decide to meet someone, and demand that you meet in public."

  • Open spams

Arif, 19. "Creating and sending a virus is the new thing now, because if they can't get to hurt you physically, then they try to destroy your computer."
